So, Elliott has been napping for over two hours now.
I have completed my yard work, and have surfed facebook for a while, and now just don't know what to do with myself.
When he wakes up we are going to the library to pick up some books I requested about detoxing. It's that time again. Nearly four years ago, Harley and I did a one week detox - I thought it was great. My energy levels went up, I released my addiction to sugar, and I lost 7 pounds in one week - I also noticed that I had less cellulite after the detox (a good reason to try it again!!)
So, we are going to see what diet limitations I give myself this time, and hope that I have the much needed will power to make it stick. Working at Starbucks will be the hardest part. I KNOW that dairy will be out for sure, and that means no lattes, cappuccinos, or fraps!! Actually, all I will probably be able to have is herbal or green tea... hmmmm....
I just read at the lake that if you believe in yourself, and your will power, you will do better with sticking to a healthy eating plan, or exercise regime. So, I guess I will do my best Little Engine imitation... " I think I can, I think I can, I think I can"
I'll keep you posted.

What isn't new?
Life is moving way to quickly to keep up with on this blog.
I feel bad because all of my good intentions to get together with friends, keep a decent blog, spend time with family, be a superb Starbucks shift supervisor, and keep our house tidy seem to fall by the wayside to Elliott and playing and discovering the world through the eyes of a toddling 17 month old.
Yes, the walking has started, as have the bumps and bruises that go along with it. Our little momma's boy loves doing things on his own, and has already learned that if you are not on a bumpy surface his hands DO NOT need to be held (that's soooo two weeks ago!!).
We don't have any words yet, but it's beginning. In the last week, he has been pointing at things and "saying" words. He also has the hang of syllables, and will repeat a sound twice if you say a two syllable word, or one for one, you get the drift, right?
I thought I would have more time, for this post, but I hear the banging of rapidly growing feet on the wall beside me - which means, "I'm awake and feel like getting out of this crib!!"

Two Months!
Wow, has it really been two months since my last post? Almost...
Many things have happened. Christmas, the end of my mat leave, the start of a new job, the end of Elliott sitting on the the floor all the time... and the list goes on.
Don't get all excited about Elliott crawling... that hasn't happened yet. He has recently discovered that if you get people to help you stand, they will also help you walk, go down stairs and do whatever you direct them to with points and shouts. We are officially being bossed around by a nearly one year old, and I am exhausted.
This could also be from the fact that I am now working around 20 - 24 hours a week at the nearest Starbucks as a Barista. The job is fantastic, but waking at 6 - 7 with Elliott, and being on the go all day, then heading to work for 4 - 6 hours and getting home at 10:45 is taking a toll. I don't like to nap either, so I just will be crabby until my body and head become accustomed to this schedule. However, I get free espresso during my shift, so it keeps me on my game.
Life is going well for the Jorys so far in 2009.
Elliott is so big!! He is a year old on Friday!!! People always told me that it goes fast, but I cried the other night because I wasn't ready for this!! To be honest, the first four months of his life are a blur. I think I may have repressed some of his babyhood, and I wish I could get it back.
Tomorrow I get to see a one month old teeny-weeny and am so excited!!! Elliott will be too... he loves everything and everyone...
Here are some more updates on my baby boy:

- Dances to almost any beat (especially Feist)
- Sleeps 12 - 13 hours a night (AMAZING!!!!)
- Eats like a sumo
- Gives slobbery kisses
- Waves bye-bye

OT/PT
Just returned from a very positive visit with the Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist that Elliott sees. They were both extremely surprised by how far Elliott has progressed since our last visit. Crawling is coming in the very near future, and I look forward to the calories I will burn chasing him around the house all the time.
They were very impressed by how well he is doing socially. As if MY child would have a problem being social?! I find that laughable. But it's true, he does love attention, and interacts well with people and other babies (as long as they do not take his toys away).
Another great aspect of our day is that we do not have to go back for an appointment until January!! Two months may not seem like a long time, but considering how many doctors and specialists we have seen in the last ten months it is an incredible amount of time. Hooray!!!
There was one downer, but I was expecting it. Elliott is still not gaining enough weight. We are feeding him as much formula as he will take, putting cream and butter in his food, and making sure that he eats at least one avacado a week. So, this week I will have a phone call from the dietician to discuss more ways to increase calories and fat.
Since I have posted so seldomly lately here are some things we have done and Elliott has done that are of note:
1. First trip to Grand Forks and Fargo to go cross border shopping - caught a cold : (
2. FINALLY cut two teeth
3. Because of the teeth being released from the gums Elliott now sleeps almost everynight for 11 hours straight - Hallelujah!!
4. Eats everything minus fruits - loves food in general
5. Kayla sang with the WSO for a Pops concert, was underpaid, but is now famous at the Library right by my house because one of the librarians there has season tickets.
6. Harley finally got an iphone, after whining about it for months. It's pretty wicked.
Life is going well, and I hope you all can say the same....

Weaning
So, it's been a long while since my last post, but things are still going about the same.
Elliott is still really weak in his shoulder girdle so we do not have a crawler, and according to his physiotherapist, he probably will not be one. We are working really hard doing exercises to help him learn how to get from his tummy to sitting and to pull up on things, but it's a slow process, and we are learning how virtuous patience really is. That being said, all the moms I know that have mobile babies are telling me to be thankful. I am, but it's hard to watch other babies so much younger than him do things that he is barely able to consider. We are seeing physio and occupational therapy once and month and they help give us great ideas to keep him active.
On the food front things couldn't be better. Elliott loves to eat!!! Now that he has perfected the art of self-feeding he gets quite offended if you try and offer him something with a spoon (unless of course, it's meat). Thanksgiving was so special. Watching him devour carrots, turkey and brussells sprouts in no time flat.
As the title of this post suggests we are no longer nursing. Elliott just stopped being interested. Starting about Sunday or Saturday it was so hard to get him to stay latched and actually eat. So, at our doctor's appointment on Monday we discussed it, and since he's not too keen, and he is still in the third percentile we are bottle feeding him formula. It has been quite a bit easier for me emotionally than I thought it would be. I don't want him to lose weight, or be dehydrated, and I knew my milk production was slowing down, so I know this is best. That being said, we are still a far way off from being empty, and I have heard stories about how painful drying up can be, so we are going to take it one day at a time, and I guess I could always take anti-histamines or go back on the pill to speed things up. Hmmmm..... there's an idea.
Other than that, it's pretty much status quo. Hope all you readers are well.
Cheers!!

Life is Good
After a rough week - I had some serious insomnia problems this week - I am feeling really good about life and everything in general. My choir performs their first concert this Sunday, and I really know my music and am looking forward to it, I have a clean house (still procrastinating with the bathroom, but meh...), Elliott is growing and just so cute I cannot believe it.
Everyday something is new for him, and therefore I get to feel excitement when he realizes that there is a baby in the mirror that he can play with, when he discovers how much fun jumping is (in the Jolly Jumper, of course), or when he sits and laughs at the cats. All of it is priceless and so amazing to be a part of. Someone once told me that no matter what stage of development your child is in, it is your favourite. So, if they are an infant you think that's the BEST, but someone with a two year old would argue that two is the best. I am just glad to have a healthy baby.
We have been making all of Elliott's baby food. And to be honest, he will not even consider eating store bought food. He has tried it three times and what a mess it turned out to be. Harley and I love taking a night, or morning on the weekend to cut up veggies, cook and then fill up every single ice cube tray we own. We bought a book called, "100 Top Baby Purees" by Annabel Karmel, and I have not found a puree that is not delicious and absolutely nutritious. Elliott's favourites so far have been Chicken Sweet Potatoe and Apple, Sweet Potatoe Pea and Spinach, and his most recent Beef Casserole. My favourite is Lovely Lentils. I swear I could eat a whole bowl full of it. This weekend we will be trying four new recipes. I am psyched.
My cousin who I mentioned on my last post had her baby. He was 6 weeks premature, and is doing fine. He does require surgery for his heart defect, but the doctors are very impressed with how well his little deformed heart is pumping. Hooray!!!!
Last but not least, we bought one other new thing for Elliott yesterday and I have to say how wonderful it is. At E-Children we purchased a Swaddle-Me blanket. Wow. Elliott loves being swaddled to fall asleep, but loves escaping equally. And now he can't escape and wake himself up in the middle of the night. Tonight is the test. Let's hope it goes well.

8 Months
Wow. I am kind of in shock that Elliott is eight months old already.
I really can't remember him growing so fast - mind you - it's understandable considering all that he and we went through in his first four and a half months.
He is so cute, and he knows it. I took him to my doctor's office today, and he was just so happy to watch all the people in the office and smile when they talked to him, which they inevitably did.
He is also sleeping alot better lately - although I have been letting him take an early morning nap in my bed and that may be why. This week I want to start exercising in the morning so that nap will be in his crib from now on. Cross your fingers for us.
Still quiet on the teething front too. We are still waiting for those chompers to peek out and make an entrance. Elliott eats like he has teeth though, and can break a mum-mum to bits in no time. Plus, his motto is, "The more meat the better." so teeth will be a definite asset when they appear.
I keep having to tell myself to be patient. He is moving at his own pace.
Not much else to report on the Elliott front. I could go into detail about recent poops, but I think I will save that for his surgeon. ; )
We have heard some scary news from Calgary. My cousin Beckie - who is just a bit younger than me - is expecting her fifth child. They found out about three months ago that this baby has a heart defect that will require open heart surgery post-natally and when it is four months (very similar to Elliott). Not only are they dealing with that, but my cousin has been hospitalized because she has nearly gone into labour a few times, and is bleeding. She is now on bed rest for three weeks while her husband works and her sister, and sister-in-law take care of her kids that don't go to school. Please mention her in your prayers as she is unable to live normally with her family right now.
On and more positive note, I have starting singing with my choir again - The Winnipeg Singers. It is so nice to have that part of my life back. It helps me relieve stress, get out socially again, and is just what I love to do!!! We are singing a concert in Estonian, Hungarian and Finnish, so alot of my time lately has been devoted to learning the nuances of Scandinavian diction. It's nuts.
